Belgian waterfronts, grand French squares and the unmistakable charm of Amsterdam's canals.
Discover Ghent, Arras and Lille, then enjoy a visit to Amsterdam on your return route. Each brings a different flavour to this continental escape: beautiful architecture, inviting cafés, independent shops and time to enjoy the places between the landmarks.
With comfortable coach travel, two nights in the Lille area and overnight DFDS sailings in both directions, the journey is every bit as much a part of the break.
Ghent · Belgium
Ghent combines the grandeur of an old trading city with the easy atmosphere of somewhere that is still very much lived in. Historic façades line the Graslei and Korenlei quays, reflected in the River Lys, while church towers and the Belfry rise above the rooftops.
Start by the water, where the old guild houses tell the story of centuries of trade. From nearby St Michael's Bridge, the views pull together some of the city's most memorable architecture — the sort of scene that makes you stop for one more photograph.
Then enjoy the smaller discoveries: a cobbled lane, a tempting shop window or a café terrace with a view. Ghent rewards a little wandering.
Arras & Lille · France
From Arras's harmonious squares to Lille's lively streets, this part of northern France brings together striking Flemish-influenced architecture and the simple pleasure of taking your time.
The Grand'Place and Place des Héros are the stars of Arras: elegant squares lined with decorative gables and arcades, with the magnificent Belfry standing above the town hall.
There is a remarkable story behind their beauty. Much of the centre was devastated during the First World War and carefully rebuilt, preserving the character of its historic façades. Today, the squares are once again places to stroll, meet over a coffee and enjoy the view.
Take a moment beneath the arcades, admire the architectural details and discover why Arras leaves such a lasting impression.
Lille's grand buildings and lively café culture make a lovely contrast. Begin around the Grand'Place, where the richly decorated Vieille Bourse reflects the city's long history as a prosperous trading centre.
Beyond it, the cobbled streets of Vieux-Lille invite a slower pace. Browse independent shops, admire the brick-and-stone façades and find somewhere tempting for lunch or a sweet treat.
With elegant architecture and plenty of everyday bustle, Lille is a city to enjoy rather than rush through.
Amsterdam · The Netherlands
Your return route includes a visit to Amsterdam, where slender merchant houses, arched bridges and waterside streets give the Dutch capital its instantly recognisable character.
Enjoy the canal views, browse the shops or pause in a café and watch the city go by. It's a chance to add another country's atmosphere to your break before continuing to IJmuiden for the sailing home.
Four cities, three countries — and a collection of very different memories to bring back with you.
