    Walk the history.
    Remember the people.

Dunkirk, Flanders Fields and the Menin Gate: five days of discovery, understanding and remembrance.

From the evacuation at Dunkirk in 1940 to the First World War battlefields around Ypres, this journey connects places that shaped history with the people whose lives were changed by it.

Guided visits, museums, reconstructed trenches and moments of quiet reflection give the story depth. Stay for two nights in the Lille area, with a Carefully Selected Hotel overnight on each travelling leg.

    Day 2 · Dunkirk

    A coast that became
    a lifeline.

After your outward overnight hotel stay, cross from Dover to Dunkirk and join a guided tour of the town. Discover the setting of Operation Dynamo, the evacuation that brought Allied troops back across the Channel in 1940.

Your visit to the Dunkirk 1940 Museum adds another layer to the story through the objects, equipment and experiences of those caught up in the battle and evacuation. Afterwards, continue to your hotel in the Lille area.

    Day 3 · Passchendaele

    Beyond the maps.
    Into the trenches.

A guided visit to Passchendaele Museum and its reconstructed trenches explores the First World War and the Battle of Passchendaele. The museum’s recreated dugout and trench spaces help make the conditions faced by soldiers more immediate than a map or date alone.

There is time to pause at the museum’s café before continuing to Tyne Cot. Moving between the displays, the landscape and the cemetery brings the history and its human cost into the same story.

    Every headstone.
    An individual life.

Your guided visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery provides time to reflect at the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world. The scale is striking, but it is the individual names—and the many soldiers whose identities remain unknown—that make the visit so moving.

Afterwards, continue to Ypres for free time. Explore the town and find somewhere for an evening meal before gathering for the Last Post at the Menin Gate.

    Reflection at
    the Menin Gate.

As evening falls, attend the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. The sound of the bugles offers a simple, dignified tribute to those who fought and died in the Ypres Salient.

This is a moment to listen, pause and remember. Following a day spent learning about the battlefields and their history, the ceremony brings the human significance of the journey into clear focus before you return to your Lille hotel.

Day 4 · In Flanders Fields

    The history,
    through human stories.

Visit the In Flanders Fields Museum with a guide before your return crossing. In Ypres’s Cloth Hall, personal accounts, authentic objects and multimedia displays explore how the First World War affected soldiers and civilians.

It is a thoughtful final museum visit: a chance to connect the places you have seen with the experiences of those who lived through the conflict. Afterwards, travel to Dunkirk for the ferry to Dover and continue to your return overnight hotel.
